The data warehouse is organized according to a star schema model, which allows for speed and efficiency with large datasets.
According to this model, the data warehouse organizes data into facts and dimensions.
- A fact represents an event, such as a visit.
- A dimension contains associated information, such as the client profile.
Cubes & Dimensions
When you build a report in Data Exploration, you must choose a cube, which contains a number of fields related to the type of fact you're investigating. But you also have all the fields from the related dimensions at your disposal. Any of these fields can be set up as rows or columns in a report. The fields refer to specific data entry points in AlayaCare.
For example, let's say you choose the visit cube when creating your report. You can pull a list of visits in a certain date range and group them by service code to know how much of a certain type of service your agency is delivering. But by using the fields related to the client dimension, you can also add information about the clients of those visits - perhaps you'd like to know whether clients of a specific geographical area are receiving a majority of certain types of service.
Measures
Each cube also contains measures, which are calculation-based within Data Exploration only. You can use them to get counts, sums, or averages of key fields. There are also measures for MAX and MIN of specific fields.
Returning to our visit report example, you could configure the report to return visit totals or total visit hours for the service types you're interested in. The measures will dynamically sum the visits or hours for the field you've selected - in this case, the service types of your choice.
See the articles below for individual cubes to learn the content of each, as well as related dimensions, and how you can apply it for powerful business intelligence in your agency.
