Hi Justin, thanks for your post. I'm pleased to tell you that we are in fact working through a major upheaval of the medication module right now. It's a bit premature to announce a specific date for when it will be ready for release; however, I would invite you to reach out to your Client Success Manager or Client Relationship Manager to arrange a review of the upcoming features so you can learn more about what to expect and ask questions.

Meanwhile, I can tell you that:

    • There will be a field added to document the purpose (reason) for the medication.
    • While there will not be a field available for side effects specifically, there will be a couple of options that might meet this requirement for you. Your CSM/CRM can arrange for you to get some detailed specifics during the feature review.
    • Medication changes will still need to be entered as a new medication in the new module as we will be doing additional development to support linking an order to the medication and changes to dose, route, frequency are an order change.  However, I've brought up your concern with the product manager, and she is taking your feedback into consideration. Hopefully she can identify if there are options that would make this workflow more efficient for you.

Agree on the struggle to maintain medications! It can be very time consuming to delete and re-enter an entire medication just because one small thing has changed. I understand the point of view about orders linking to make changes, but not all changes to a med require a physician order. For example, I have a med that is due to be given twice daily, and I enter the admin times as 8:00am and 8:00pm. Our patient now decides they would prefer to have this medication given at 8:30am and 8:30pm. This is not a change in the medication order (still twice daily), but I have to delete and re-enter the medication just to change this information. This would save me a big admin step upon initial DC to home from hospital as well, when hospitals give me the med list, but NEVER give me the administration times of the meds. I would be able to add in the meds so our nurses are ready-to-work, and then once we determine the exact admin times, I could add those in later.

Hi Emily, thanks for your input! I'll pass your example along to the product lead for the feature.

As a risk manager, ALL changes to medication orders and timings to be entered as NEW.

Perhaps when creating a new order- there could be an option to copy current order for modifications and discontinue current order, and have reason for discontinuation. (Same function as copy form and modify to a new form)

With regards to medication timings, Apart from Time Critical Medications: the ISMP gives latitude medication administration timings.  "Medications administered more frequently than daily but not more frequently than every 4 hours (e.g., Twice Daily, Three Times daily, q4h, q6h). Can be administered within 1 hour before or after the scheduled time"

Hi Mariam, that's an interesting suggestion to modify a medication order. I'll communicate that. Thanks!
